Praying for a Promise
Praying for a Promise
I am hurting…does anybody care? I am confused…what should I do?I am tired…how can I find rest? Do you find yourself praying for a promise from God?Do you just want Him to assure you everything is going to be okay?Oh friend, I get it.I understand the feeling of despair…walked that road a time of two…or three…or more, myself. You know – I don’t know much. But, one thing I know for sure – God is good. His word is full of promises that you can grab a hold of and cling to.What is the promise He has for you in the midst of your trials today?
There is an old hymn that talks about God’s promises. The first verse and chorus go like this, “Standing on the promises of Christ my King.Through eternal ages let His praises ring.“Glory in the Highest” I will shout and sing, standing on the promises of God.Standing. Standing.Standing on the promises of God, my Savior.Standing, standing! I am standing on the promises of God.”(Did you sing it as you read it?It is hard not to if you know it.)This first verse is a confident declaration that we will stand on God’s promises and lift up our praise to Him – no matter what! The next verse tells us why.“Standing on the promises I cannot fall - listening every moment to the Spirit’s call.Resting in my Savior as my all in all - standing on the promises of God.”Wow!That song has been around longer than we have. Most of us have sung it many, many times. But the words have greater meaning than ever before – don’t they?Do you believe that no matter what you are facing today, you can stand on God’s promises? Are you praying for a promise just for you?
God’s word is full of His promises. Here are a few to cling to today…
Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
God promises in this verse that good will come from every trial and every heartbreak. He can use these times to grow us and change us and bring us closer to Him.If we trust in Him, then we can declare Genesis 50:20, “But as for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.”No matter what evil comes your way, God will work His good plan.I love this quote…"In a thousand trials, it is not just five hundred of them that work for the good of the believer, but nine hundred and ninety-nine, plus one.” George Mueller
Here is another one that reminds us that our hope is in the Lord.He has a plan for us (say, “for me”)…
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
This is one of my all-time favorites…
Isaiah 41:28-31 “Do you not know?Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
When I read the scripture above – it is almost as if God is saying, “Duh! What are you worried about? I am the Creator of all and I am in control. You can do all things in My strength. You can serve in My power. And if you place your hope, your confident expectation, and your faith in Me – then you will be transformed – you will mount up on wings as Eagles and soar to heights you never imagined.”Whew! That makes me want to shout, HALLELUJAH!!!
And a few more…
Philippians 4:19 “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
Matthew 11:28-29 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
2 Peter 1:4“Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
God is good, isn’t He?Instead of praying for a promise, let’s all spend more time in His word and rest in the ones He has already given us. The more time we spend with Him – the more confident we will become that His promises are personal and just for us.
As I close this out, I wanted to share that the picture above is actually my back yard.On a day I really needed to hear from God, I looked out my window and found my very own personal rainbow. WOW! God has something very personal and very special for you as well.He loves you with an everlasting love – always has – always will.
