Nobody Special
Nobody Special
Once upon a time we believed that we had what it takes to conquer the world. We wore tiaras and fought great battles with plastic swords. We climbed to the top of a dirt hill and claimed success was ours. We believed we could do and be whatever we wanted. We proclaimed it. We talked about it. Our parents prompted us to tell everyone. We believed we could sing. We believed we could dance. We claimed talents that we did not have. We were unstoppable. But…what happened? How did we go from believing we could be anything and everything we wanted to the point of believing that we are nobody special?
Nobody special? Really? Why do we buy into that? Where is the basis for that belief? We as Christ followers have no foundation for that. It is not found in scripture. God never tells us that we are nobody special. No. He says quite the contrary. One of the great spiritual mentors of my life, Andy Horner has stated thousands of times, “God didn’t take time to make any junk.” Think about that for a minute. Do you know that you are not a mistake? Do you believe that you are here for a reason? Do you know that God has a specific plan for your – yes, for your – life? Do you know and accept that Jesus hung on that cross and died for YOU – for YOU!!!? Why would He do that if it were true that you were nobody special?
We look all around us and we see incredible people. This one can quote scripture. That one can stand and speak in front of many. They have their act together. She shares her faith without fear. He leads a Bible Study. They are successful. They are making a difference. They are special. Then we look at our own self and we believe that we are nobody special. Why do we play the comparison game? Why is it so easy to see the value in others and so hard to find any value in who we are? Why do we not believe God’s word? He is our creator. He is the One who breathed our world into existence. He formed us in our mother’s womb and we dismiss His word – the truth – about who we are.
Yes, we are called to be humble. Yes, apart from Christ we are nothing. But as Christians, who are we? Who have we become? We are His beloved. He lives in us. He is alive in us!!!! He has made us special! We have each been given gifts and talents and a purpose. He desires for us to love Him with all our being. He desires for us to love Him enough to say, “Yes!” to Him. You see…we have all heard it before – and it is true…”He doesn’t call the equipped, He equips the called.” One thing we can know for sure is that as we stand and proclaim to be nobody special – God is waiting. God is waiting for you to accept that because He is alive in you, you are special and He desires to use you. Will you let Him?
Today is a great day to shake off our unbelief. Today is a great day to accept God’s word as our very own truth. It is personal. It is a personal love letter to each of us. It tells us who God is and who He desires for us to become. Give up the “I’m not good enough”, “You don’t know what I have done”, “But bad things have happened to me”, “I am a failure”, “I am a disappointment”, “I am unworthy, too busy, overwhelmed, ill-equipped…nobody special” claims. Do it today. It does not matter what you have done or what has happened to you – God deems you as special and desires to use you for His glory.
Let’s be like Isaiah and be willing and grateful for what God has done for us…
Isaiah 6:8, “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Who shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”
You see, today God is asking, “Who is willing? Who is willing to be used for My glory?” What will you answer? “Not me, I am nobody special.” Or “Here I am, Lord – saved by your grace, redeemed by You, equipped for your glory – use me! Use me, Lord. I desire to serve you!
God may use you in your home in the lives of your family. God may call you to serve at church. He may give you a platform to share Him. He may use you to touch one life. He may use you to touch thousands. Others may know He is using us or no one my ever know. None of that matters. All that matters is that we are willing and prepare our self to be used by Him. Spending time with Him by studying His word and talking with Him throughout our day prepares us for His purposes. That is exciting! Are you excited? I am! Today I am praying for you. You, my friend, are SOMEBODY SPECIAL!
