What Matters Most
What Matters Most?
I have a long list of what matters to me, some really big things and some things that have no business being on the list. What I learned as a child, my life circumstances, my insecurities, and my goals have all contributed to the many items that have found there way onto this list. Over the years I have learned that my plan, my choices, my feelings and my fears can all lead me astray, taking me where I never wanted to go. My list of what matters does not matter at all. I now know that what matters most is what matters to Him. So, my list has been put away and I have a new list.
Why do we make a list without consulting God? We listen to the world and we begin to believe that our success matters, pleasing people matters, being happy is of the utmost importance, and our appearance is high on the list. How foolish we are. God has already told us what matters. He lovingly has given us His word that we can hold in our hands, read and learn what matters most. Just like babies grow, need solid foods and must learn to chew, we are to grow, learn the basic truths and then devour the meat of God's word - going deeper and deeper until He comes to take us to our eternal home. (Hebrews 5:12-14)
We often read scriptures and twist them to say what we want them to say. One misunderstood scripture is Psalm 37:4. We love to quote the part that says, "He shall give you the desires of your heart", but we skip the words surrounding this verse. So, today let's take a look at it, starting in verse 3 - "Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness." Verse 4 - "Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart." Verse 5-8, "Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass. He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret - it only causes harm." My commentary says...
So... we are to place our trust in our Savior, putting our full faith in Him and Him alone - no longer in ourselves. We are to delight in Him - love Him passionately, know Him intimately and understand that our life is really all about Him. When we do, our desires will be to fulfill His desires for us. Therefore, we will be able to rest and wait patiently, no longer trying to keep up with others or worrying, because we know that He has us and His way is best!
Master, what matters? Show me what matters most.
Lord, make what matters to You matter to me.
