Choose Discernment
Choose Discernment
We hold our feelings and our opinions in high regard, don’t we? We start many of our sentences with I feel and In my opinion. We believe that our feelings and our opinions matter. But, do they really? When making decisions or walking the path God has for us to walk, should we lean into our feelings and our opinions? No way. Our feelings are not trustworthy, and our opinions are limited and simply a judgment call, at best.
As we study the Bible we learn about discernment. Discernment trumps feelings and opinions every single time. What is discernment? I asked my 11 year old granddaughter if she knew what discernment was and she answered, “Wisdom from God”. So, with that definition let’s ask ourselves – do our feelings and our opinions matter or is it discernment – aka, the wisdom of God - that matters?
Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
whoever is discerning, let him know them;
for the ways of the Lord are right,
and the upright walk in them,
but transgressors stumble in them.
Hosea 14:9
Oh, we want His wisdom, don’t we? But when something comes our way, we immediately rely on our own opinions and feelings, which are heavily influenced by the world. Shouldn’t we stop that and instead learn to immediately seek wisdom from above? In James 1:5, we read that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God and He will give generously without judging.
Discernment comes when we learn to put Jesus first and foremost in our lives, when we value God’s word so much that we make time to study it and when we seek wisdom from above instead of phoning a friend or hopping on Google. Let’s choose discernment. Ready?
Today, let’s ask God for wisdom and discernment. Let’s seek to live a life that is pleasing to Him. Let’s check ourselves and let go of deceitful feelings and opinions and instead trust the only One who is trustworthy. And all God’s people said, Amen!
