It Takes Time to Develop Intimacy
It Takes Time to Develop Intimacy
God wants our time. Not only does He want time, but He wants alone time with each of us. Why? Because it takes one on one time to develop intimacy and He wants an intimate relationship with His children. Spending time alone offers the opportunity to get to know Him in a deeper, more intimate way. You see, He knows us and He wants us to know Him as we are known. In the Old Testament, God called the prophets to come to Him alone. Moses and David spent time alone with God and no doubt experienced intimacy with Him. Then there is the example Jesus set for us when time and time again He spent time alone with God. It takes time to develop intimacy – which means it happens over time, but it also requires that we commit time to Him.
So many times, we search for the right devotional to read during our quiet time. But I encourage you to just grab your Bible, go to a special quiet place in your house, and sit with your Savior. If you don’t know what to read, don’t have a book you want to study, start by reading all the red words in your Bible. Who was Jesus? What did He say? Or maybe read the Book of John and learn all about Jesus’ life. And – if you struggle with reading the Bible – grab you a copy of The Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd Jones. (I read it to my grandchildren, but keep reading long after they fall asleep. ;-)) Read a story there and then go find it in your big girl Bible and read about it. Let the words in His Word come alive inside of you.
Please, don’t be so busy that you deny yourself the most incredible experience you can have. There is nothing like experiencing the presence of the Lord. Be still and quiet, clear your mind, open your hands and be ready to fellowship with Him. Be alone with Him. His word says, Be still and know that I am God. Still your body, still your thoughts – He is waiting. Developing intimacy is absolutely worth investing your time in this relationship. David was intimate with the Lord. Here is a passage that gives us a glimpse what that intimacy looks like…
“God, you are my God; early will I seek You; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh longs for you in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water. So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory. Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You. Thus I will bless You while I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips. When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice. My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me.” Psalm 63:1-8
We want that, don’t we? We want to know that no matter where we are and what we are doing, He is there. And we don’t just want the head knowledge that it is true, we want to feel His presence. He wants that, too. He wants us to know how deeply He loves us and that we have Him. Just like we are His, He is ours. He will walk with us and talk with us, once we start walking with Him and talking to Him. Intimacy is ours when we invest the time to develop it. No relationship can grow when it is one sided. It takes two committed parties.
It takes time to develop intimacy. And no matter how intimate you believe that you are with God – there is more. There is more and more and more and more – all the way until we see Him face to face. How can you know Him more today?
