Set Apart or Not?

Sometimes it is hard to know if someone is a believer or not. As believers, we often blend in with the world. We love the things of the world. Like Eve in the garden and like Jesus in the wilderness, Satan tempts us with a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for more possessions, and a craving for achievement. We get sucked in and before we know it, we are living to have our worldly desires met.

“Do not love this world not the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.” 1 John 2:15-17

As we read this scripture, we are reminded that God loves self-control. The world tells us to say what we want to say, do what we want to do, and to be ruled by our feelings and opinions. But, that is in stark contrast to exhibiting self-control. We are set apart when we guard our mouth choosing to speak life, when we guard our actions choosing to do what is right, and when we choose to not act based on our feelings, but in obedience to God’s word.

Scripture also tells us that God loves generosity. Instead of striving to get all the things, we should be giving freely. Giving our money to spread the good news and help those in need. Giving our time to serve others and mentor them in their faith. We should be giving our talents as an offering to God, allowing Him to use us for His glory.

God loves a commitment to humble service. Isn’t that what being like Jesus looks like? As a believer, shouldn’t we love others, show up to lead them to Jesus, and be about our Father’s business? Shouldn’t we value most what God values?

Being set apart requires being different. We can no longer go along with the ways of the world. We should talk different, act different, and be obedient to God’s word.

“But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for He called you out of the darkness into the wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9

Today, can I encourage you to show up as a Daughter of the King. Be who He is calling you to be and do what He is calling you to do. Be different. Be bold. Be brave. Walk in your God given identity, follow Jesus, and lead others to Him.

It matters. It matters greatly. People are waiting for you to lead them to Jesus. Will you?
