Have YOU Been Set Free?

My new favorite song repeats the words “Who the Son sets free shall be free indeed.” Free, indeed! Can you pause for just 60 seconds and ask yourself, “Have I been set free or am I still in bondage?” We are comfortable in bondage; it feels normal. Even though freedom is ours, we carry our chains, we stand in our cell, we feel the weight. If you are a child of God, if Jesus is your Master, if the Holy Spirit resides in you - you have been set free. You are free indeed! Now… be FREE!

God tells us in His word that His ways are not our ways. Can we get an amen? You see in the world we think of bondage as having a master, having to surrender, and maybe even hoping someone will pay our ransom. So, the words mastersurrender and ransom make us afraid. But because God’s ways are not our ways we can rejoice because we are no longer held in bondage! Yes, I was in bondage. You were in bondage… to sin. Sin had a hold on us, there was no way out, we were doomed to an eternity in hell. But God… Yes, God sent His only Son to pay our ransom, to offer us hope and to secure us a spot to spend our eternity with Him. Our freedom was secured. Are you free? Have you been set free?

We declare we are free, yet we live in bondage. We are bound up by our past, by our thoughts, by our feelings and our fears. We carry our chains of anger, bitterness and despair as if our identity is found in our past and we are in control of our future. Are we bound up? Or has the Master set us free? Our Master has broken our chains. He has unlocked our cell.  So why, oh why, are we clinging to our chains? Why are we peeking out the cell door, scared to death to live in our freedom? Why are we comfortable living the same, thinking the same and talking the same way as those who don’t know our Master? You are set free! Now… be FREE!

If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:36

What does that mean? In John 8:32 Jesus tells us, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” In John 14:6 He says, “I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me.” Jesus is the truth. When He is our Master, we experience freedom – real freedom. We can be free from our past. We can break free from our destructive thoughts and habits. We can be free of fear. We can even relinquish the chain of control, because we know He is in control. How? How do we do it? We let go. We let go of all that is holding us captive and we raise our hands high in surrender and we declare, Have Your way, Lord! Have Your way in me

Surrender is a beautiful thing. When we surrender all of ‘me’ to all of Him, we are free to love as He loves. We are free from offense and the need to defend. We are free from worry because we know we can trust Him and His plan for us. We are free to love Jesus, free to praise Jesus and free to worship Him with our life. As a child of God, the only way to experience the freedom that is ours is to raise our hands in surrender. (Hands up!)

Who the Son sets free shall be free indeed! You have been set free! Now… be FREE!
