Does It Really Matter?
Once we accept Jesus as our Savior, does it really matter how we live our lives? Does it matter how we spend our time? Do our priorities matter at all? I mean we have prayed the prayer and invited Him into our heart, so can’t we check that off our To Do list and just focus on living our best life?
Does it matter if we read the Bible? We go to church and hear a sermon most weeks. We read the verse of the day and follow some believers on Instagram. We are good people. We really try to do right and make our children behave, isn’t that enough? Do we really need to find time to study God’s word?
Does it really matter if I have a relationship with Jesus? It is hard enough to maintain a healthy relationship with my spouse and my friends. How am I supposed to “know Him” intimately? That just seems weird. Can’t I just love Him from afar?
Do these questions ever run through your thoughts? Does it matter? Does it really matter?
Maybe the better question is, does it matter to you? The proof of our salvation is the Holy Spirit alive in us, prompting, guiding, and convicting us. If someone was reading your life as if reading a book, what would they believe matters most to you?
Our Christianity is signified by our salvation (the beginning) and our glorification (when we are face to face with Christ). In between our salvation and our glorification lies our sanctification – the process of God transforming us, changing us, helping us lay our flesh down and becoming more and more like Jesus – all the way until He takes us home to be with Him. Sanctification is our progression to holiness. So, this period of sanctification is what matters most for us as believers. (No more saying, this is just how I am.)
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed buy the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:1-2
It is our relationship with Jesus that offers sanctification. As we come to know Him more and more, we grow to love Him more and more. It is our love for Him that will propel us to be obedient to Him and live the life we are called to live. You see, our life is not all about me. As believers, our life is to be all about Him and living a life that brings honor and glory to His name.
How do we grow to know Jesus more?
“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.” John 17:17
It matters if we spend time in God’s word. His word is truth, the only truth we can truly believe and it brings about sanctification. We don’t just read it, we don’t just learn what it says - we get into His word to gain understanding of who He is and what His will for us is. We come to know Jesus more by studying God’s word. It is our time in the word, our time in prayer and the help of the Holy Spirit that reveals Jesus to us. The more we come to know Him, the deeper our relationship with Him grows. We are invited to experience Him.
Nothing can fulfill our need for the truth of God’s word. It is powerful and relevant and filled with the wisdom that can only come from God. The more we get into the Word, the more it gets into us and sets us apart. We learn to live by the truth of the Word and not by what the world says.
So… does it really matter? Does it matter if you grow in your relationship with Jesus, if you study God’s word and how you live your life? Does it matter to you? Does it matter to those who are watching you? Does it matter?
It does matter. It really does. It matters to you. As we surrender all of our life to Him, what we gain far outweighs what we lay down. Surrender is what brings about our freedom. It matters to all the people on the other side of your obedience. It changes who you share Jesus with and who sees Jesus in the way you live your life. For some, it will matter for all of eternity.
