Leaders Lead by Example
It started out as a comment I made on a friend’s FB post, then I turned it into a reel on my social media accounts, and today I want to have a conversation about it. You see, God won’t leave me alone about it. He keeps bringing it back to the forefront of my mind.
Leaders don’t lecture, they lead by example.
It started with my children. I would go into their room and over explain why they were in trouble and what they could have done better. Then I carried it into other relationships, feeling the need to explain and re-explain why I said what I said. I also brought it into my leadership, sharing why we can or cannot do something and going back over it again and again to make sure they understood where I was coming from. I was lecturing. Yikes! I hate that. Why lecture? I think I did it (and sometimes still do) because I want you to understand me and know my heart. Grab your magnifying glass, because that is really my need for approval… which in all honesty, is a pride issue. (insert sad face). God hates pride.
Do you lecture?
When?
Why?
What does God ask us to do instead? He asks us to be like Jesus. Jesus came and set the example for us to follow. Are we following? (My friends and I recently recorded a podcast episode asking our listeners the BIG question… Are you a fan of Jesus or are you a follower of Jesus? It comes out ____ be sure to listen.) If we are following Jesus then we should be leading by example.
What example are we setting?
· Approval seeking?
· Fearful / anxious living?
· Angry and on the defense?
· Self-promotion and self-centeredness?
· Busyness and distracted living
What example should we be setting?
· Loving and serving people
· Life of obedience
· Setting healthy boundaries to keep us on the path God has for us
· Giving grace and showing mercy
· Glorifying God in all that we do
Here is what I wrote on the post…
Let’s pause and take a few minutes to make a note or two.
Am I lecturing?
Am I leading by example.
Where am I failing and where am I leading well?
Give it some thought. Let’s talk to God about it and let Him convict us of the changes that need to be made. Let’s get back on course and follow hard after Jesus!
