Your True Identity
Your True Identity
Identity theft… it is rampant among Christians. Many have exchanged their true identity for the lies that Satan continues to whisper in their ears. What about you? Have you bought into those lies or are you standing firm on the truth of what God has to say about you? If you are struggling with the truth, you are not the only one. This is an age old problem that goes all the way back to Eve. But, don’t you want more? Don’t you want peace and freedom and joy and to live the abundant life? Well, it all starts right here – by accepting your true identity. And, let’s be real – it has nothing to do with your feelings. You may not feel like you are who God says you are, but that doesn’t change the truth.
Let’s look at a practical example. You spend many years studying and completing your residency. You graduate med school and put on the white coat. You do not feel like a doctor, but you have the degree. You are a doctor – not the best, not world renown, but you have the title – doctor. Do you accept the truth that you are a doctor and step into your new career or because you don’t feel like a doctor - do you resign the hospital and go get a laborer job? Declaring “I don’t feel qualified” and denying this title you have earned would be absurd, don’t you think? Well, speaking of absurd - living as if we are not good enough, as if we are unworthy, as if we need more than what we have been given is just as absurd as that example. It is time to accept your true identity.
God’s word – the truth - tells us that God loved us so much that He made a way for us to have a relationship with Him. He sent His Son to pay the penalty for our sins; to pay our ransom. When we receive Jesus as our Lord and our Savior, we receive the title, “Child of God”. We may not feel like we deserve this title, the crown may seem a bit too big and awkward, but it is ours nonetheless. We are a daughter of the One True King. You are right, we don’t deserve it and we certainly have not earned it, but we have received it because of God’s amazing grace.
You are enough – good enough, smart enough, successful enough. You are enough. You are enough for God to send His Son to be crucified. You are enough to wear His crown. You are enough – not because of what you have done – but because of what Jesus has done for you. The title, Child of God, is yours. Lay down your faulty labels, reach up and receive your crown, place it on your head and then start deepening your relationship with your Savior and becoming who He created you to become.
You are worthy – worthy of the titles God has placed on you – not because you feel worthy, but because He, in His goodness, has deemed you worthy. His grace washed you clean - no more guilt - no more shame - you are worthy. When God breathed life in you, He filled you with purpose; with a plan for your life. His plan is not all about you, it is all about Him. When we take our eyes off our self and fix them on Jesus, we will come to understand it is Him who is worthy – worthy of our surrender, worthy of our praise, and worthy of our complete devotion.
Who are you?
You are a Child of God, therefore you are enough. You are redeemed and forgiven, therefore you are worthy to live the life and pursue the purpose He has placed within you. How? How can you do that? Well, because you are complete in Him.
You are complete. You have all you need – no need to search for someone to complete you, affirmation from the world, or one more thing to ensure your happiness. God gave us all we need when He gave us Jesus. He is everything we have ever wanted and everything we will ever need. We just need to lay down our selfish desires, needs and insecurities and seek after Him. Those things – selfish desires, needs and insecurities – are Satan’s lies echoing in our ears. When we come to know Jesus in an intimate way, we are set free! In John 8:31b-32, Jesus said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” YES! Free! When we abide in Him we are free to become who God created us to be. Free to live the abundant life Jesus came to offer. Free to walk in the truth of who we are – who we truly are. Free to embrace our true identity.
