Becoming and Remaining Unstuck

Dear Stuck - I am done. I am done with being stuck. I am done with the swirling thoughts that get me stuck. I am done believing anyone or anything can restore me other than my Savior. And I am done living in stuck mode when I have been set free! I am becoming and remaining unstuck. Thanks, but no thanks. We can no longer be friends. p.s. And just so you know - I plan to tell everyone I know to set a healthy boundary when it comes to you and to instead choose, believe, abide and remain steadfast. See ya later, Stuck.

Are you ready to write that letter? Are you ready to step into more in your relationship with Jesus? Are you ready for your life to be about Him and who He has called you to be? We get so focused on the things of this world that do not even matter; while what matters most waits. He waits for us to give it all to Him. He waits for us to realize that He is bigger than our struggles, our hurt feelings, our fears, our pain, our distractions. He is bigger and is ready to carry all of that for us so we can be set free to live out the calling He has placed on our life. So, what does He wait for us to do?

  • He waits for us to choose Him, to choose to put Him first and foremost in our life. We read in Joshua 24:15, “choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve”. It is a choice we must make today and every single day. If we are not choosing God, then we are making whatever distracts us a false substitute or what I call a little “g” god. Even if we do not recognize it, we can quickly choose foolishly and make our job, our pain, our children, our goals, our hobby, our plans, etc. our god. For us, there is only One choice and He waits for us to choose Him over and over again.

  • He waits for us to believe. What do you believe? Because if we believe what we say we believe, what are we doing - stuck? Why are we not giddy and filled with passionate pursuit of serving our Lord? We need to be still and remember what it is that we believe with all our heart, our soul and our mind. Remember who He is and worship Him. Do you believe or are you struggling with unbelief? Remember the story in Mark where the man brings his son to Jesus to be healed? The man is desperate and holds his son out to the One he hopes can heal him. Jesus said to the man, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” In Mark 9:24 we read, “Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” You see, here is the dilemma. Even those who believe can be nagged or pursued by doubt and hopelessness. But when we find ourselves there, struggling with unbelief, we must do as this father and cry out to Jesus for help. He will show up and help us.

  • He waits for us to abide – to dwell, to stay, to settle in, to sink deeper. We read about abiding in John 15. Jesus uses the symbolism of the vine, the vine dresser, and the branches in verses 1 through 7. As we read this passage, we see that the only way to abide in Christ is to obey. And when we choose to obey, we will bear fruit. But, if we are not abiding in Christ or if we are not obeying Him, it leads us to spiritual disaster – kind of like being stuck. What? Ugh! That hurts, doesn’t it? So does that mean when we are stuck we are not choosing Him first, we are toying with unbelief and we are not abiding in Him? I hate that thought – but let’s consider our adversary. He wants us to elevate our distractions and lose sight of the Truth, aka Jesus. Satan wants to hold us captive and keep us shackled. The Truth has come to set us FREE. When we abide in the Truth, we are safe, free, whole and secure no matter what comes our way.

  • He is waiting for us to be steadfast in our faith. You see, there is no need to run away when Satan rears his ugly head. No need to be bogged down in the mire and stuck. Instead, we are to fight against the wiles of the wicked one - knowing that victory is ours when we are steadfast or committed to God because He is greater than Satan. Not only will we win the battle, but He has promised to perfect us or grow us, establish us by making our way stable, strengthen us, and settle us on His immovable firm foundation. Let’s read I Peter 5:6-10,

“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.”

So, becoming and remaining unstuck requires us to choose, believe, abide and be steadfast in our faith. Let’s encourage one another as we do! Let’s step into the more that God has for us. If there were not more, why would Satan want to hold us down? Let’s surrender all that has us stuck and run to Jesus – hands up, filled with praise and step into His calling without fear or hesitation.
