Have Your Heard the Good News

Have You Heard the Good News?

Heard any bad news lately? We are inundated with it. Turn on the television – and hear all about it. Open your laptop – and read it. Answer the phone – and someone is wanting to talk about it. Bad news spreads like a wildfire and before we know it, it is all consuming. It becomes our focus. But what about the good news? Have we forgotten the really good news?

Bad news is nothing new. Remember Paul’s letter to Timothy? Paul told him,

“But know this: Hard times will come in the last days. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, demeaning, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to the form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid these people. For among them are those who worm their way into households and deceive gullible women overwhelmed by sins and led astray by a variety of passions, always learning and never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.”

2 Timothy 3:1-7

Jesus warned us in John 10:10, “A thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy…” Satan is alive and well and quite frankly, I believe a little freaked out. He knows his days are numbered. He will do all he can to make good people do bad things, to keep those who know they need Jesus from seeking Him and to distract us from letting God use us and our life for His glory. Satan is bad news.

But there is more to our story. Jesus goes on in John 10:10 to say, “…I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”

That is good news!

  • Jesus came… He came to earth as a man and lived a perfect life so that He would become the sacrificial lamb. He left His throne, and He came. This is really good news.

  • He came so we could have life… His blood was poured out for the atonement of our sin. He gave His life so that we could be reconciled to God and have eternal life. Woo Hoo! This is the BEST news! The thieve take lives, the Shepherd gives it.

  • He came so we could have life and have it more abundantly… The more abundantly part starts now. But don’t be fooled, it doesn’t mean we will have a lot of stuff. No, you see God wants to give us what is best for us. And what is best for us is Him. Living a more abundant life includes having a growing relationship with Jesus, being sensitive to the Holy Spirit, and stepping into more with Him. He has a plan for you and is waiting for you to step into it.

As we embrace the Good News, let us not forget that we have an adversary. Paul goes on to tell Timothy…

“In fact, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. Evil people and impostors will become worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who taught you, and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:12-17

As you hear bad news, remember that we know how this story ends. We celebrate the Good News because we know that our Savior has overcome this world. We know that we are never alone and that God will carry us through every circumstance. He is our peace, our delight, our comfort, our rock, our anchor. He is our everything. This season and our time on this earth, it is short. The Good News is that those of us who have believed on Jesus will spend eternity in Heaven with Him. Glory!

In the meantime…

Love Jesus with all of your heart, soul and mind.

Seek Him first above all else.

Spend time studying God’s word and in prayer.

Worship Him daily.

Live a life that brings honor and glory to His name.

Praise Him – no matter what – praise His Holy Name!
