What do I Want? What do I Need?

How would you answer those questions? For so much of my life the answers were in sharp contrast to one another. Much of what I wanted, was not actually what I needed. I am not sure when I became aware that my wants weren’t really what I needed, but I do know that I would have told you I knew the difference. Have you ever thought about the fact that we don’t know what we don’t know?

This year has brought challenges for me. I won’t bore you with the details again, but I am now aware of what I want and want I need. They are no longer different. In fact, what I want is exactly what I need.

I want and need Jesus. I want and need community.

Where are you in your relationship with Jesus? I don’t mean to be too direct or get into your business, but it matters. For most of my life, I loved Jesus and knew all about Him, but I didn’t have an intimate relationship with Him. I attended Bible Study and did a daily devotional - but by noon, I would have no idea what I had read. I just didn’t really get it. There was a barrier that lay between me and my Savior. That barrier was my sin.

Oh, you would have never known it. I looked like a devoted Christ follower. I went to church, prayed before I ate and would even pray with you. The problem was I was living for me. I was pursuing my dreams; I was seeking the approval of others; and I thought I needed a man to make me complete.

Now I know that Jesus is everything I have ever wanted and everything I need. My relationship with Him is more important than anything else in my life. I hunger and thirst for Him and He is the only One who can fill my cup. And actually He doesn't just fill it, He overflows it.

Nothing matters more than Jesus, yet we struggle to find time for Him. What if we began to protect our time with Him? What if it became so important to us that we struggled to do anything else? What if it became rare for us to miss spending intimate time in His presence? After all… He calls us friend.

You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
— John 15:14-15
